Marine Festival at the Hermitage Theatre

Holding a festival at the Hermitage Theatre in midsummer with the participation of the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of People's Artist of Russia Sergei Stadler has become a wonderful tradition of the Northern capital.

This year, the theme of the festival project is the sea element. The idea was inspired by the glorious history of St. Petersburg - one of the most famous sea cities in the world, where everything related to the sea is valued.

The concert will open with works by the outstanding Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The symphonic poem "Oceanides" refers to ancient Greek mythology, filled with numerous nymphs - patronesses of the water element. It was the Oceanids who listened with trepidation and feeling to the story of Prometheus chained to the rock.

The program will also feature a part entitled "Naiads" by Sibelius from the second symphonic suite "The Tempest", which is inspired by the play of the same name by William Shakespeare.

The vocal cycle "Sea Pictures", part of which will be presented in the concert, is one of the most significant works of the late romantic - the prominent English composer of the turn of the 20th century Edward Elgar, whose works are not often performed on the Russian stage.

Four sea interludes entitled "Dawn", "Sunday Morning", "Moonlight" and "The Tempest" are symphonic fragments of Benjamin Britten's opera "Peter Grimes". Due to its artistic complexity, as well as the large cast and choir, the opera Peter Grimes is a rare guest at opera houses, but four interludes are known and can be heard in the programs of various orchestras.

The symphonic fantasy The Tempest, created by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, is based on the eponymous work of William Shakespeare, in which adventures, magic and love are intricately intertwined. The composer included the program of his work in the score: "The Sea. The wizard Prospero sends the spirit Ariel, who obeys him, to create a storm, the victim of which is the ship carrying Fernando.

The Magic Island. The first timid impulses of love between Miranda and Fernando. Ariel. Caliban. The loving couple surrenders to the triumphant charm of passion.

Prospero throws off the power of magic and leaves the island. The Sea.

The concert will conclude with the first movement from Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic suite Scheherazade, entitled The Sea and Sinbad's Ship. The amazing combination of instrument timbres and the luxury of sound colors create an image of the sea, striking in its beauty and power. Rimsky-Korsakov, a former naval officer who made a round-the-world voyage, knew, felt and loved the sea, images of which were repeatedly reflected in his works.
