Premiere

The music of the Austrian composer Franz Suppé combines generous Italian melodies and Viennese dance, especially waltz, rhythms. His operettas are distinguished by their superbly developed musical dramaturgy, vivid characteristic portrayal of the characters, and a variety of forms approaching operatic ones.

One of the best examples of the Viennese operetta, "The Beautiful Galatea", was written by Franz von Suppé in 1865. Over the years, the light, virtuoso-elegant music of "Galatea" has not lost its artistic appeal, retaining all the power of its emotional charge, temperament, and youthful spontaneity.

The ancient Greek myth of Pygmalion and Galatea, retold by Ovid, has repeatedly been reflected in works of art. Well, how could it be otherwise? Firstly, it is a mythological story about art itself: the brilliant sculptor Pygmalion created a statue that delighted with its resemblance to a living woman. And secondly, it is a myth about love: the ardent misogynist Pygmalion fell in love with his own creation and even asked the goddess Aphrodite (in the ancient Roman version, Venus) to revive his beautiful Galatea.

In the operetta by the Austrian composer Franz von Suppé, the classic plot is changed: that is why it is an operetta - everything in it cannot be too serious. According to the plot of the play, Pygmalion's servant dreams that the master refuses to sell the created statue to the patron Midas, because he himself is in love with it. He asks Aphrodite to revive Galatea. The dream comes true, but - oh, horror! - Galatea turns out to be an extremely frivolous woman and pays attention to the servant of her creator. Pygmalion finds it hard to forgive betrayal, and he again calls upon the higher powers to turn Galatea into a sculpture, which he sells to Midas.

The performance by the artists of the Petersburg Concert is a humorous message about how not all wishes that come true bring joy and not all that glitters is gold, and is timed to coincide with the 205th anniversary of the composer's birth.
