Opera in two acts

In the last summer of his life, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who wrote many operas, including The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, Cosi fan tutte, The Magic Flute, turned to a plot from ancient Roman history, which he embodied in his last opera, La Clemenza di Tito.

The score of the opera was created in record time: in just eighteen days, and in the same year, La Clemenza di Tito premiered in Prague, where Mozart was treated with great reverence. True, the initial success of the opera was average - even the presence of the Austrian Emperor Leopold II, on the occasion of whose coronation with the Czech crown the composer received an order to write a new opera, did not help.

The opera "La Clemenza di Tito" is a rather rare guest on theatrical podiums and concert stages, but if it appears on the poster, then you should hurry to get acquainted with this "brainchild" of Mozart, who set serious tasks for the performers, requiring the highest professionalism.

According to the plot of the opera, conspirators set fire to the Capitol in the hope of destroying Emperor Titus, but he manages to escape. Titus is in sorrowful contemplation and approves the death sentence, but at the last moment he tears it up, believing that the ruler should be magnanimous and merciful (unlike his historical prototype Titus Flavius Vespasian).

Sometimes the opera "The Clemenza of Titus" was performed on the stage in cases when they wanted to glorify the sovereign leader and extol the greatness of his soul. Thus, in 1826 in St. Petersburg, on the eve of the execution of the Decembrists, a revival of this opera was planned, but Emperor Nicholas I did not change his mind and forbade the performance of Mozart's work.

"You, Mozart, are a god!" - I want to exclaim again and again! Virtuoso arias, exquisite vocal ensembles and skillfully woven orchestral fabric are the true merits of this opera score, in which the composer seems to have been more laconic in his choice of musical colors than in some of his other operas.

After all, wisdom does not tolerate pomposity and external effects - its manifestation is in love, forgiveness and spiritual beauty.
