A truly remarkable fate: a composer, virtuoso violinist, oboist, organist, and music teacher, he entered the history of science as a great scientist who significantly changed fundamental views on the structure of the universe. Among Herschel's discoveries were the planet Uranus and its satellites, double stars, nebulae, and galaxies; he discovered infrared rays in the solar spectrum; and discovered the motion of the solar system in space—and these are far from all of his accomplishments. Herschel designed and built telescopes that captured the imagination of his contemporaries. The impressions of his astronomical discoveries were reflected in the works of Byron, Shelley, and Tennyson.

Herschel also composed numerous symphonies, sonatas, and concertos for various instruments and orchestra. Although such a diversity of activities seems incredible, it confirms the ancient belief about the connection between music and mathematics.

The concert will feature works by William Herschel himself, as well as works by his contemporaries, W.A. Mozart and Joseph Haydn, with whom Herschel was well acquainted.
