Literary and musical concert dedicated to the 145th anniversary of Alexander Blok

A poet in Russia is more than just a poet.

Poets are destined to be born in this land.

Only those in whom the proud spirit of citizenship roams,

for whom there is no comfort, no peace.

E. Yevtushenko

Anna Akhmatova called A.A. Blok "the tragic tenor of the era" in one of her poems dedicated to his memory. His contemporaries called him the first poet of the Silver Age. He remains so in our consciousness, joining the cohort of the greatest poets of Russian literature of all centuries.

A. Blok keenly sensed the turbulent times of Russia's transitional years, which he passionately loved and simultaneously hated the ugly aspects of its social life. He remarkably predicted the monstrous cataclysms that shook Russia long before they actually occurred. He strove for an ideal embodied in the image of the "Beautiful Lady" and was tormented by real relationships with his loved ones.

The subtle and recognizable landscape of Russian fields and forests, St. Petersburg streets and squares, is transformed in his poems into a philosophical summary of the fate of the Motherland and the fate of the intelligentsia, responsible for what was happening and bearing moral responsibility for it.

Blok enthusiastically embraced the revolution, but died from "lack of air," as he himself put it in his speech "On the Appointment of the Poet" at a gala meeting dedicated to the 84th anniversary of A.S. Pushkin's death at the House of Writers on February 11, 1921, six months before his early death:

"Pushkin... was not killed by D'Anthes's bullet. He was killed by the lack of air." His culture died with him…”

At a literary and musical evening at the Kochneva mansion, dedicated to the 145th anniversary of the outstanding Russian poet A.A. Blok will perform his poems, excerpts from his diaries and notebooks, memoirs of his contemporaries, romances and songs by G. Sviridov and Yu. Shaporin based on the poet's verses, and piano works by Blok's outstanding contemporary, composer A. Scriabin.
