Opera in Four Acts

Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Macbeth" is one of the composer's greatest achievements. It is the Italian maestro's tenth opera and the first based on a Shakespearean play.

Verdi sought a plot with deep meaning, powerful passions, and a high degree of emotion. Shakespeare's tragedy perfectly met the composer's needs, who was captivated by the idea of presenting multifaceted psychological portraits of characters on the opera stage, rather than mere props. This is why Verdi's demands on the performers of the leading roles were exceptionally high: he not only explained the intricacies of the vocal lines to the soloists in detail but also acted as director, paying close attention to the characterization of the role.

The opera "Macbeth" was first performed in Florence in 1847. For the Paris premiere (which took place in 1865, almost twenty years later), Verdi significantly reworked the score, which he treated with particular tenderness. Today, the composer's favorite opera, "Macbeth," graces the world's finest opera houses.

It is in the second version that one of the most mystical operas, a production few directors undertake, will be performed for St. Petersburg audiences and guests.
