Polovtsov House is the private residence of the historian and philanthropist Alexander Polovtsov on Bolshaya Morskaya Street in Saint Petersburg, built in 1857 on the basis of the building of Prince Sergei Gagarin.
It is distinguished by the high artistic value of the decoration, which was worked on by the famous architects Nikolai Bryullov and Maximilian Messmacher. After the revolution, the building was nationalized, and since 1934 it has housed the Saint Petersburg branch of the Union of Architects of Russia.
The main work on the interior redesign was carried out by Bryullov in 1870-1875, modernizing the water supply and heating systems and adding tapestries from the Polovtsov collection to the interior. In the 1880s, Messmacher continued his work, significantly transforming the facades and interiors, including the creation of the Great Bronze Hall with its unique decoration.
The mansion also includes the Portrait Gallery, the White (Ballroom) Hall and the Oak Hall, decorated with Rococo and Baroque elements, as well as carved oak panels and historical elements. The Small Dining Room was decorated in oak and leather.
