The Mystical Concert-Performance "Vrubel. Defeated"

"Petersburg-Concert" presents another synthetic premiere—the concert-performance "VRUBEL. DEFECTED"—for the 170th anniversary of the artist's birth. Spectators will witness and participate in a large-scale aesthetic event on the border between art and confession, where symphonic sound, artistic expression, vocals, plastic theater, and light projections combine to form a single, unsettling pulse of the times.

At the center of the production is the Symbolist artist of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Mikhail Alexandrovich Vrubel, who, amidst a growing psychological illness, reassembles himself from letters, memoirs, and personal insights. This is the story of a Genius relentlessly haunted by voices—of time, reason, hope... and a mystical, incessant Voice, returning again and again to one image. It is the Demon, reflecting the artist's inner rift, that becomes both an alluring temptation and a terrible sentence.

The viewer will become a witness to a tragic journey: they will visit the artist's studio among unfinished canvases, a merciless theatrical premiere of the last century, and finally, a psychiatric hospital, where reality loses its grip and the Voice remains the only thing that continues to resonate.

Who was Vrubel? A madman or a prophet, a ruined man or a perfectly healthy artist? The answer will be a mysterious Voice, like the shadow of an image that cannot be banished.

The project*, performed by the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Pavel Petrenko, will feature music by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Anton Rubinstein, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Antonín Dvořák, and other composers. The soloists will be Anastasia Simanskaya (soprano) and Kirill Zharovin (baritone). Vocal accompaniment for the climactic scenes — St. Petersburg Chamber Choir.
