Jazz Wednesday at the Catherine's Assembly

The members of the Nevsky Jazz Quartet—Grigory Voskoboinik (double bass), Sergey Tarusin (piano), Andrey Blinchevsky (saxophone), and Alexey Shikhov (drums)—are recognized masters of the St. Petersburg jazz scene. These improvisational virtuosos have known each other for years, and playing together harmoniously is as natural for them as breathing. The musicians understand each other perfectly. A couple of rehearsals are enough for them to brilliantly and inspiredly perform any program: jazz standards and blues, bossa nova and lyrical jazz ballads, complex instrumental pieces, and familiar compositions by legendary jazz musicians. The vocal compositions are performed by Tonya Pletzer, one of the city's most sought-after jazz vocalists and winner of international competitions.

Piano, double bass, saxophone, and drums compete with each other, joke, argue, and march hand in hand through a universe of free improvisation. Each new encounter with Nevsky Jazz confirms the accuracy of Sergei Dovlatov's statement: "A jazz musician is not a performer. He is a creator, creating his art before the audience's eyes—fragile, instantaneous, elusive, like the shadow of falling snowflakes... Jazz is a delightful chaos, the foundation of which is intuition, taste, and ensemble feeling pushed to the limit... Jazz is ourselves at our best. That is, when spiritual uplift, fearlessness, and frankness coexist within us..."

The Great Hall of the Catherine Assembly is transformed into an elegant club space. Guests can bring drinks and snacks purchased from the theater buffet into the auditorium and listen to music while comfortably seated at a table.
