Lenya's Concert-Performance – Weill's Voice to the Music of Kurt Weill

Kurt Weill is a name unfamiliar to the general public. However, his songs have been performed by such stars as Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and Nina Simone.

By a twist of fate, it was Weill, born in Germany to a Jewish family, who moved to Paris to escape the Nazi regime, and then to New York, who was destined to combine the high standards of Western European musical art with the appeal of lighter genres: operetta and cabaret.

The composer had a tremendous influence on the Broadway musical, while leaving behind a legacy that includes classical genres such as the symphony, concerto, divertissement, and cantata. His work was admired by 20th-century musical masters such as Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, and Alban Berg, while the "ordinary" public applauded his vocal compositions, which were successfully covered by jazz ensembles and pop groups.

The concert will feature the composer's most famous works, and it's possible that guests will recognize melodies they've long known.
