Burlesque Comedy "Cocktail"

A burlesque comedy based on the stories of the writer, satirist, humorist, and playwright Arkady Averchenko.

The musical performance "Cocktail," based on the stories of the Russian-language king of humor, Arkady Averchenko, is a sparkling comedy whose central character is St. Petersburg at the beginning of the 20th century: the capital of the Russian state, a teeming anthill—a cocktail of people with completely different social status, cultural level, and political views. The first thing that strikes you when visiting this Northern Palmyra of the last century is the luxury and wealth of some and the poverty and misery of others. But while the lower classes could still ek out a living in the capital of the Russian Empire, life around it and on the outskirts of the country was becoming simply unbearable: endless peasant revolts, Jewish pogroms, national oppression, working-class discontent, rampant speculation, and moral turpitude—all of this was preparing Russia for the coming revolutions. But this was only a premonition of the storm, wittily distilled in Averchenko's texts. "Cocktail" is a play about love, the search for fortune, mirages, and the realization of one's place in life. In "Cocktail," the characters tolerate each other, joke with each other, and even band together to survive these difficult times. Thus, the fates of the tsarist secret police agent Timofey Puzyakin and the famous St. Petersburg lawyer Kazimir Malnykin, his wife Miliktrisa Kirbityevna and their daughter Nina, their maid Sonya and the budding terrorist Dmitry, the art director of the Abazhur restaurant Yakov Shleyzer and the prima of the Odessa restaurant Variety Palace Glafira Chmokina (stage name Betty Bonz) unexpectedly intertwine. The vast world of St. Petersburg becomes cramped and familiar, and the characters in "Cocktail" transform from social types into living people of flesh and blood.

So, if you love art in all its forms—theater, music, dance—you definitely need to see "Cocktail."
