COLORFUL DREAMS OF RUSSIAN BAROQUE

Russian musical culture of the Baroque era (late 17th – first half of the 18th century) is an exceptionally vibrant and unique phenomenon in the evolution of European musical tradition. Reflecting the general patterns of stylistic development, the musical culture of St. Petersburg combines European trends (Italian and German Baroque) with Old Russian art, acquiring its own unique, inimitable sound. Closely intertwined with the vibrant and pompous architectural style of Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the appearance of the imperial capital was shaped, establishing the Northern Palmyra as the center of European cultural civilization, surpassing other European cities.

Russian Baroque is directly linked to the reign of Peter the Great and, especially, Elizabeth Petrovna. The Russian Empress appointed Francesco Araja, the leading exponent of Baroque opera at the Russian court, as court conductor, and then invited Giovanni Battista Locatelli's renowned troupe to St. Petersburg. It was here that the most significant musical premieres by Europe's greatest composers were presented. The Empress's musical tastes defined the aspirations of Russian Baroque and transformed the Northern Capital into the capital of world Baroque music.
