Uncle's Dream

A production by the St. Petersburg State Musical and Drama Theater "ART" based on F. M. Dostoevsky's novella.

"Uncle's Dream," written and published in 1859, immediately after the writer's return from hard labor, is at first glance an unpretentious, almost vaudevillian story about the life and customs of the seemingly quiet provincial town of Mordasovo. One fine day, serious passions boil over there. An eligible bachelor arrives in town: an elderly, clearly insane, but very wealthy Prince K. Immediately, the town's leading lady, a poor and extremely ambitious bourgeois named Maria Alexandrovna Moskaleva, decides to marry her daughter Zinaida to the old man at any cost. From this simple plot, Dostoevsky, a great connoisseur of human souls and relationships, creates a brilliant, funny, and sad parable about the degradation of social and human morality, about how quickly people, for the sake of material gain and the realization of their ambitious plans, are ready to overstep everything and everyone, rename evil as good, and betray everything pure and holy in their souls. And it turns out that this elderly womanizer, who confuses dreams with reality, is perhaps the brightest and most natural person in Mordasov. He is sincere in every moment of his existence. He doesn't lie, doesn't seek personal gain, and lives in his own world, where he's still young, healthy, and ready to pursue any woman.

The role of the prince will be played by Honored Artist of Russia Murad Sultaniyazov. This charismatic actor of the Buff Theatre, adept at improvising, is adept at drama, tragedy, and comedy. With ease and grace, he imbues any character with vitality and authenticity.

Vera Egorova and Evgenia Glotova will appear as Moskaleva. Serafima Ryutina will play Zina.

The sets and costumes are being designed by Vyacheslav Okunev, one of the most sought-after set designers in musical theater, a master of, without exaggeration, European standing, People's Artist of Russia, and Principal Designer of the Mikhailovsky Theatre. Since 1975, the master has designed and costumed over three hundred productions. He has contributed to opera and ballet productions at the Mariinsky Theatre, the Bolshoi Theatre, the Chamber Musical Theatre "Saint Petersburg Opera," the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre, and La Scala. The production's director is Honored Artist of Russia and Artistic Director of the St. Petersburg State Musical and Drama Theatre "ART," Alexander Isakov. He is a brilliant follower of the Leningrad theater school and a student of Ruben Agamirzyan. Over the years, he has staged over 130 productions in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Yekaterinburg, and other Russian cities, as well as in the CIS and Europe. The unique troupe of the "Art" Theatre, comprised of graduates of A.B. Isakova's collection of performances from various years, lovingly assembled by the master, has been delighting St. Petersburg audiences and visitors with performances and shows since 2015.
