I have erected a sign of immortality for myself!..

On the 315th anniversary of M.V. Lomonosov

On November 8th of this year, the Kochnev Mansion will host a Literary and Musical Concert-Assembly dedicated to the great figure of Russian science and culture, M.V. Lomonosov (1711-1765). The concert takes its name from the first line of Horace's Ode XXX, which M.V. Lomonosov first translated into Russian. Lomonosov, which in subsequent translations and imitations was called "Monument" (Derzhavin, Batyushkov, Pushkin, Bryusov, and many others).

He was first everywhere, but not in wars of conquest, like his idol Peter the Great, who cut a "window to Europe," but as a thinker and natural scientist, astronomer and physicist, chemist, mosaic artist, and poet, who reformed the Russian language of his time.

A natural born from the depths of the Russian people, he not only became a Russian academician and one of the founders of the first Russian University, but also an honorary member of the Bologna and Swedish Academies, earning the respect of outstanding European scientists and thinkers, and increasing Russia's worldwide fame in the science and culture of his time.

The stylized costumed concert-assembly will feature poetry and prose excerpts by M.V. Lomonosov, memoirs and statements about him by his contemporaries and descendants; vocal and choral works based on his texts; instrumental works by Russian and foreign composers – contemporaries and followers – inspired by Lomonosov the poet. Musical names will include: Giuseppe Sarti, court composer to Catherine II; J.S. Bach, whose creative flourishes occurred during Lomonosov's years of study in Germany; Dmitry Bortnyansky and Osip Kozlovsky, who developed Russian musical culture in the 18th century; and many others. Sacred psalms and secular cants will be performed, including the "Peter's Canticles," which M.V. Lomonosov knew well and performed in his youth; arias from operas by the aforementioned composers; romances and songs from the 18th and early 19th centuries, thematically reflecting the poetics of this great figure of Russian culture and science.
