Farukh Ruzimov. An Evening of Early and Modern Choreography

The Petersburg Concert invites you to the Catherine Assembly for an evening of early and modern choreography*, featuring stars of the Russian ballet scene.

The centerpiece of the program is the one-act ballet "The Moor's Pavane," based on Shakespeare's "Othello," set to music by the English Baroque composer Henry Purcell. Its creator, the renowned American choreographer José Limón, "contained" the plot of Shakespeare's tragedy within the strict framework of a measured 16th-century court dance. The stage, stripped of scenery, allows the audience to fully concentrate on the movements of the two dancing couples, revealing Othello's tragedy, the despair of his unjustly accused wife, and the treachery of his friend. Jealousy, rage, despair, and a cry for help clearly emerge through each ceremonial step.

The ballet was first presented to the public in 1949, and in the following decades it was regularly staged by choreographers around the world. The Catherine Collection presents "The Moor's Pavane" edited by People's Artist of the Russian Federation F. Ruzimov. Othello is performed by People's Artist of the Russian Federation F. Ruzimov. Desdemona is performed by Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, prima ballerina of the Mikhailovsky Theatre I. Perren. Iago is performed by Mikhailovsky Theatre soloist A. Kasyanenko. Emilia is performed by Mikhailovsky Theatre dancer K. Makhviladze.

The program of the evening of ancient and modern choreography also included several gala numbers.
