The concert program will feature works by five Russian composers: Mily Balakirev, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Borodin, and César Cui.
In the late 1850s and early 1860s, a creative association consisting of five musicians was formed in St. Petersburg. Historian and critic Vladimir Stasov became a close friend of the composer community, and he gave it the name "The Mighty Handful." The association also went down in history as the "New Russian Music School", the "Group of Five" ("Russian "Five""), the Balakirev Circle - after the name of the ideological inspirer of the association. Under Balakirev's leadership, the representatives of the "Mighty Handful" expanded their knowledge of musical art (not one of the participants had a special education!), analyzed compositions of the past and present, heatedly discussed new trends, and created their own works. Rimsky-Korsakov recalled Balakirev as follows: "They obeyed him unquestioningly, because the charm of his personality was terribly great...". The main theme of the Balakirev Circle's work is special attention to the history and culture of the Russian people. It is no coincidence that the plot of many of the works by the musicians of the "Mighty Handful" was based on significant historical events in our country, and the melodic basis was folk songs. The works of the Balakirev circle include operas and romances, symphonies and symphonic program works, works for piano and chamber instrumental opuses - a rich heritage that is an integral part of Russian and world musical art. The program will feature the most striking examples of creativity, as well as rarely performed works by representatives of the "Mighty Handful", for whom music has become a true calling and life's work.
