Concert-tour of the Kochneva House: architecture and music

At the beginning of the 19th century, along the Fontanka River embankment, not far from the Anichkov Bridge, a house designed by architect Luigi Rusca was built for first-guild merchant Fyodor Ilyin and his family. This classical-style building is contemporary with the Kazan Cathedral, the Admiralty, the Horse Guards Manege, and other famous buildings of St. Petersburg.

Several decades later, in the 1880s, the house was acquired by timber merchant Pavel Kochnev in the name of his wife, Olga.

In the 20th century, thanks to the efforts of their daughter, Nina Kochneva, the mansion was saved from destruction, and in 1964 it was transferred to the Lenconcert (now the Petersburg Concert).

The exquisite interiors of the halls and rooms, decorated by such eminent masters as the architect David Visconti, the painter Giovanni Battista Scotti, and the sculptor Ivan Terebenev, have beautifully preserved the atmosphere of a bygone era. However, the history of the Kochnev House remains largely unexplored and remains full of mysteries, while the amazing discoveries and research taking place today testify to the extraordinary spirit of its creators and owners.

The concert tour includes interesting, sometimes unexpected, facts and information about the mansion's creation, as well as musical and literary works by Pushkin, Mozart, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and others, reflecting not only the tastes of the house's owners but also the characteristic features of St. Petersburg's cultural life in the 19th century.
