Prokofiev. Alexander Nevsky

The film "Alexander Nevsky," released in 1938, is the fruit of the fruitful collaboration between director Sergei Eisenstein and composer Sergei Prokofiev. The film was a resounding success, with Prokofiev's music playing a key role.

"Prokofiev is national in the rigor of his traditions, harking back to the primitive Scythians and the unique precision of the 13th-century carved stone in the cathedrals of Vladimir and Suzdal. He is national in his homage to the origins of the Russian people's national identity, enshrined in the great folk wisdom of frescoes and the iconographic mastery of Rublev." "That's why antiquity resonates so beautifully in Prokofiev—not through archaism or stylization, but through the most extreme and risky twists of ultra-modern musical writing," Eisenstein shared.

Based on the film's musical material, the composer wrote a cantata, "telling" in seven parts the confrontation between the Crusaders and the Russian army led by Alexander Nevsky.

In the final number of the cantata, "Alexander Nevsky," the words "In native Rus', in great Rus', there shall be no enemy," sung by the choir, sound not only like a hymn but also as a parting word to future generations.

The concert takes place in the year of Sergei Prokofiev's 135th birthday and is timed to coincide with National Unity Day.
